"Copywriting Secrets Of The Indian Mystics"Dave Alston
Been ruminating on this one for a little while now but its probably one of the most profound discoveries of my life. It all began with a little book about music and its had such a deep influence on my copywriting and small business, indeed my whole outlook on life, I'd like to share it with you all now.
Heres what happened
About 8 years ago I bought the book Man and Music In India by Roshmi Goswami and was introduced to a staggering thought from within its pages that every note sounded by a musician is actually a container for the spirit of the musician.
Now breaking that open further I began to see that (Im a musician myself; drummer, guitar player) as the notes of a musician could be filled by the very soul or spirit of the musician himself or even God or demons (if you believe in them) so the notes were almost like little boats that each musician filled with their persona unique to them and by plucking, singing, striking the note they in essence launched it out into the waves of the sea of sound where it eventually reaches the port of its destination - the audiences hearing ear, who gladly receive and enjoy it (or otherwise if a bad musician).
In my minds eye I saw each musical piece therefore (stick with me here - its worth it I promise) as composed of thousands of little boats (the notes) sent out to sail across the sea of sound by vibration (the waves) to the audiences listening intently on the other side of that sound sea.
For many years I thought about this and then realised (sorry Im a bit slow on the uptake sometimes!) that this didnt just apply to notes in music but more deeply and profoundly it actually applied to the very stuff of life itself - WORDS.
As such every single every single word you say or write is a container, a little boat as it were that actually contains YOU! The question is what fills your little boat before you launch it out to sea?
If the light bulb has not gone on yet it will, just keep pondering the bigger picture above - perhaps of a lone master violinist or a sitar and tabla player deeply intwined in an intricate Indian raga and before long youll understand exactly what Im driving at and its deep, very profound.
When you apply the above metaphor to words you see the little boats not as notes just being containers for the music and spirit of the musician but rather words as little ships themselves that contain YOUR very essence, spirit, soul and persona.
Every time you speak or write a single line you release a little Armada of these little boats out onto the sea of existence itself - if speaking, then out onto the splashing waves of the sea of sound - if writing, then even more deeply into the sea of heart to heart direct communication itself without a sound, directly to the target.
What s so profound about the written word is its ability (when the writing is good) to bypass all the defences humans erect against other humans intrusion and drop directly into the emotional and decision making part of the heart to evoke powerful responses. Thats also good if you want to sell something to someone.
Quick example
My wife didnt even know I really had feelings for her in the first months of us knowing each other and shed moved to another town 65 miles away - I wrote her a letter; it was pretty powerful (I was terrible at controlling my emotions then and splurged the clumsy letter full of poetry and undying declarations of love etc!) and she phoned me saying she was surprised at my feelings for her; within 8 weeks we were married and that was 17 years ago.
Prior to the letter Id just been a fleeting aquaintance and if Id tried face to face Id probably have blown it being so nervous and all but; the words carrying my spirit, passion, persona bypassed all her natural resistance and melted her heart!
So whats this all got to do with copywriting? Well a massive amount really; the point Im trying to uncover here is that you reveal your very personality through every single word you write even if there are some aspects youd rather not show to others, especially prospects or clients.
Each little copywriting word boat is saturated with an invisible (to you but not your readers), almost DNA like substance which betrays who you really are to everyone who reads what you write.
Eek! Kinda scarey
So putting your best food forward for business doesnt mean covering up the nasty bits and hoping folks wont find them. Their sixth sense tells them to avoid you or do business with you because the substance leaks out from the little boats to alert them to who the real you is, whether you like it or not.
Rather, you fix whats wrong in your business, align who and what you are with an honest decent direction and let that saturate all your future messages as you roll out your campaigns to win the world. Then your transparency will win you friends and business you become attractive.
Never forget when your words drop through someones letter box, email box or arrive through the ether on a telephone wire folks instantly know deep in their gut whether youre the real deal or not.
You cant hide it - when you wrote your copy or launched into your sales pitch you filled your little boat with who you really are, your own unique DNA probably without even knowing it.
Think about your copywriting this way; yes youve got to grab attention, give the other person what they want, see things from their perspective, give them the benefits up front etc but when it comes to your USP and what makes YOU special, make sure your entire message is drenched in your unique, niche tailored, custom fitted, perfectly targeted USP but it must be done with absolute honesty or they will know, they just will.
I remember years ago working for a photocopying company - I was the best in the whole company at getting appointments yet useless at selling them if I went on an appointment; why? Because although Id admitted it to no one including myself at the time - I hated photocopiers (they are so boring) and the people could instantly tell that when I spoke about them.
On the other hand I loved getting appointments for the company (I secretly hoped the boss would send the other good reps on the calls) and thats why I did so well at setting them, people were instantly turned on by my words down the phone to them because I was passionate about lead generation.
My boats were full to to the top with unique Dave Alston-ness! and people loved it so they set appointments with me.
You also need to be special, unique, different for someone to do business with you these days because folks
can so easily go somewhere else at the click of a mouse - align your business with who you really should be.
Ensure every word you say, or write is filled to the brim with the right spirit and true integrity and allow the sea to carry each little boat directly into every single heart you target. Youll be amazed at what happens.
Make no mistake, in these increasingly impersonal and troubled times people value enriching business partnerships they can rely on and will give them their business. But youll only get them by targeting the heart and theyll only let you in if they can instantly sense they can trust you.
People want to know you care - theyll sense it instantly; good or bad, when your word ship arrives whether you want them to or not. So why not examine all your words verbal and written from how your small business answers the phone, your voice mails, your sales letters, autoresponder messages, right through to your web site content? Replace defective words with heart to heart communication instead.
Check if your communications really are brimming with the good stuff you want others to see in your business when they get word from you. Dont send them containers full of refuse with your good companies name on it without even realising it. The worlds got too much of it already spam. Send out a little fleet of word ships filled with gold to make peoples lives better instead.
Thats just one tiny copywriting secret Ive gleaned so far from the Indian Mystics. Keep your eyes peeled for the next article its The Indian Rope Trick.

Hu is in India but Who am I in China?
Today, Sunday morning, I sit thinking and typing at my computer. My thoughts are in my homeland, India and my body is in China. The body is here and mind there for a good reason. Mr. Hu is president and I am resident and both are in each other?s countries (what a difference the absence of one small letter makes!). Mr. Hu will return in a few days and I will stay on longer. Mr. Hu is important to the world and I am to my family and hopefully, to friends and students.
Mr. Hu discusses economics and politics and other important worldly things with his counterparts across the globe and I ruminate on life, love, nature and other sundry things that sometimes have some meaning for some students and friends. My actions and decisions drive a microcosmic economy of a family. Mr. Hu?s every word and actions drive the economy of a large, growing nation and billions of people across the world and what he will say or do in India may affect me, too, perhaps in significant ways.
There is a lot of excitement in India these days about the potential of these two ancient nations and the growing cooperation between them (bilateral trade expected to surpass US$ 20 billion this year). In India, the excitement is not merely limited to businessmen and politicians but spans across the nation and touches the hearts of the common man, too. Some canny and forward-looking students are taking up Chinese with the same enthusiasm that many Chinese students are showing for English. They know that knowledge of Chinese will gave their careers a huge push and that little advantage which often makes so much difference, like the lack of a ?p? in my resident status.
Today, I am a foreign teacher, and a little more, in China and some time later, I imagine, many of those reading this article might be ?foreign teachers? in India, Europe, the US or perhaps in Brazil, Russia or Africa. Foreign teachers are like mini ambassadors who help build small bridges of understanding, cooperation and respect between their homelands and adopted countries. Their success in another land is incumbent on their ability to accept a different way of life and to accept it deep within their hearts. If they continue to feel ?foreign? they will remain just that and become a curiosity among the people. The feeling of being an ?outsider? in an alien land can be emotionally devastating for most and is caused largely by one?s actions rather than non-acceptance by others.
To live and work in another land and to understand another culture, its people, their minds and way of life is a singularly exciting experience that is a journey within as much as it is outside. Through discovering an outside world we also discover an inner one. And, as we learn to adapt to new external situations so do we learn to accept ourselves as we are, ironing out the creases of prejudices and stereotypes in our hearts and minds. It helps us emerge new, refreshed and energized with a zest for life, love and nature.
While we live in the external world, our real lives are internal ones?that is where we experience a rainbow of emotions. That is where we feel happiness and sadness, despair and elation. We exist outside but we live inside.
I have been in China a little more than four years and while I might appear a ?foreigner? to untrained eyes here, inside me I feel ?bendi de? (local). Sometimes, when I return home to India during the holidays, my relatives and friends remark how I look Chinese. I suppose I look somewhat foreign to them. But, inside I feel as Indian in India as I feel Chinese in China. And, as long as China and India keep coming closer, as they were once upon a time, I will continue to integrate into a Chindian?a man with one body and mind but two mothers, India and China.
Mr. Hu is in India and this is who I am in China!

Bilateral Knee Replacement Surgery in India - Benefits, Risks and Costs
India is turning out to be a top destination for patients and travelers worldwide. With its state of the art hospitals and highly qualified UK and USA trained doctors, it will soon transform into the worldwide medical hub. This article gives information about the various aspects of getting the knee replacement surgery in India.
Bilateral knee replacement surgery:
Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis commonly involve both the knees to a similar degree in the same person. Many such patients want a double knee replacement to revert back to normalcy as they can avoid another admission for the second knee replacement surgery at a later date.
A safe procedure of bilateral knee replacement surgery:
Many studies have vouched for the decreased morbidity after simultaneous replacement. Bilateral knee replacements are safe in young patients without cardiac problems. In older patients the risks may be higher. Here it is better to do a sequential TKR (replace one knee first and then replace the other after a gap of one to two months. This involves two periods of hospital stay.
Anesthesia is safely given by epidural catheters and postoperative pain relief is continued for 24- 48 hrs.
Costs for Bilateral knee replacement surgery:
The total cost will be very less in India, as there is only one hospitalization. The patient can go home by the 10th day in case of bilateral knee replacements. The cost is very less in India as compared to USA and UK.
Recovery period for bilateral knee replacement surgery:
This is shorter after double knee replacement surgery as the intervening period between sequential knee replacements is avoided.
The benefit of bilateral knee replacement surgery in India:
The time to full recovery is shorter. If that does not seem intuitive, think about it this way: If you figure it will take between 2-3 months to really start to feel right after a knee replacement, and you do that twice, that's 4-6 months of total recovery time. If you do them both the same day, you go through the experience once, and the whole thing is behind you in 2-3 months. Definitively, the biggest advantage is the cost of the Knee Replacement Surgery in India ?which is very low in India.
The risks associated with bilateral knee replacement surgery in India:
The surgical risk appears to be increased. The types of complications that were more common in patients having the knees done together included: Temporary disorientation after surgery,
The need for blood transfusions, and Severe cardiac complications (which can be fatal).
If the complication rates were doubled in same-day both-knee surgery, we'd call that a tie, since you'd have to have the operation twice if you did it on separate surgical dates. However, the complication rates for all the complications listed above are more than double with same-day both-knee surgery. The absolute magnitude of the risk of heart attack is still not huge, but the difference was noticeable; the risk of needing a blood transfusion goes up considerably, though. So, in view of this, why would anyone want to do them both at once? My observation is there are two sets of feelings on the part of patients about this. Some people are risk-averse, and want to minimize the risk as completely as possible; clearly, they would want to do one knee at a time. Other people are what I call therapy-averse (or pain-averse), meaning they want to minimize the overall length of time they are either in physical therapy (perhaps for work reasons) and the overall length of time they are uncomfortable from the surgery. Provided they don't mind the increase in risk, these are good candidates for same-day both-knee surgery.
Now, getting the Knee Replacement Surgery in India could be highly beneficial due to highly reduced costs and extremely good medical care available. Medical tourism is the term coined which covers patients traveling across the globe for tourism purposes clubbing their requirements for treatment of acute illness, elective surgeries such as cardiology, hip replacement, knee replacement, etc. The government is taking serious initiatives in this regards and plans to start overseas marketing of India as a medical tourism destination. The government of India is of the opinion that by marketing India as a global medical tourism destination, it could capitalize on the low-cost, high-quality medical care available in the country.
Dheeraj Bojwani MD is an International Patient Consultant to foreign patients who want to travel to India for getting low cost medical treatment and surgery. More than 400 patients from across the globe have taken the benefits of his services till date. Plastic Surgery in India - Cost, Benefits and Risks
India offers cutting edge Plastic Surgery for everything from Face-lift to Neck contouring. Indian Health care industry is undergoing phenomenal expansion. The combination of high quality services and low cost facilities is attracting thousands of international patients every year. This is hardly surprising considering the cost of cosmetic surgeries in India is 5 to 6 times lower than anywhere else in the world. When compared to other popular countries; India has the advantage of hospital facilities, experienced doctors and cost. Compared to Thailand, India on average is 50% cheaper and when compared to South Africa a sixth the cost.
WHAT IS PLASTIC SURGERY?
Plastic surgery is a specialized branch of surgery that deals with correction of all visible defects and deformities of any body part. Such deformities may be present since birth or acquired following injuries or after various surgical procedures. These defects commonly involve the skin, soft tissues, muscles or underlying skeleton. Plastic surgery is also done to improve the looks or aesthetics of normal body parts such as face, nose, eyes, cheeks, lips, chin, breasts, the shape and contours of abdomen, waist, hips, legs etc. Thus, plastic surgery has a very wide domain.
WHO REQUIRES PLASTIC SURGERY?
Any person of any age irrespective of cast, creed and socioeconomic status suffering from any of the following may be the candidate for plastic surgery:
1. BIRTH OR CONGENITAL DEFECTS:
Abnormal shape of the head or skull, clefts of the lips, palate or the face. Defects or abnormal shape of the eyes, nose, ears, jawbones etc. Defects of the limbs, fused fingers, extra fingers, large sized fingers and toes. Defects of the genitals such as hypospadias i.e. abnormal shape of the penis with abnormal urinary opening, absence of vagina, inter sex etc. Large black hairy nevus or moles, haemangiomas and vascular lesions. Foetal defect correction in utero i.e. before birth endoscopic correction of some defects inside the mother?s womb.
2. ACCIDENTS & INJURIES:
Several roadside and automobile accident injuries involving face, eyelids, nose, ears etc. All cases with fractures of orbital, cheek nose and jawbones. Injuries of the limbs associated with extensive skin loss or degloving injuries. All types of hand and finger injuries especially industrial crush injuries. Cut tendons and nerves, total or partial amputations of the limbs, hands or fingers also can be corrected by plastic surgery.
3. BURN INJURIES: Acute burns due to flames, chemicals and acids, hot water or fluids, electric flash. Post burn contractures, thick hypertrophic scars causing deformities of several body parts.
4. POST SURGERY DEFECTS:
Following extensive removal of various parts or areas involved in malignant or cancerous growths such as breasts, jaws, lips, mandible etc.
5. SKIN DEFECTS
Treatment of vitiligo or leucoderma (white) patches, removal of tattoo marks, split ear lobules.
6. COSMETIC OR AESTHETIC SURGERY:
For the removal of facial wrinkles, forehead wrinkles, heaviness around eyelids, baggy eyelids, crow?s feet wrinkles, peri oral wrinkles, jowls, and double chin. Lifting up of the eyebrows, nose job or changing the shape of the nose, cheek and chin alterations all can be done by plastic surgery. Thinning or augmenting lips, creation of dimples, reshaping ears, breast reduction or enhancement, breast lifting can be done by plastic surgery. Reshaping arms and legs, body contouring surgery for loose hanging belly, waist, hips, buttocks and thighs can be done by plastic surgery. Removal of pregnancy stretch marks, laser assisted facial rejuvenation and hair transplant are all procedures that come under plastic surgery. Benefits of Plastic SurgeryThe great thing about plastic surgery is that the benefits can be both physical and emotional, both external and internal. The physical and external benefits of plastic surgery can be multi-faceted. The first thing that many people notice after plastic surgery is that their bodies seem more proportional or balanced. Whether a person opts to have surgery on their face, hips, breasts or thighs the aim is to sculpt the body in a way that looks natural. The result often allows people to look more like they feel like they should look. This may sound strange, but often a nose that is too large for a particular person's face or a bust that is too large or too small can blur all of this person's other features making them seem disproportionate. Surgeons aim to correct this by taking each individual's body into consideration before deciding on a desired result.
The physical result of plastic surgery often produces a healthier look and often people who undergo surgery see this healthy look permeate their entire lifestyle. People who have surgeries like liposuction and breast reduction usually feel that their new bodies allow them to participate in physical activities that they wouldn't have considered before surgery. Plastic surgery can open new doors to people who had previously lived their lives scared to take on activities like swimming or aerobics because of the lack of clothing involved and the way that they felt that they would be looked at by other people.
Blending in is sometimes quite important to people who decide to have plastic surgery, especially when they have grown up teased because of their features. Surgery often allows these people to finally feel like they fit in with people around them instead of sticking out because of the shape of their body or because of their facial features.
Whether a person chooses to undergo plastic surgery to improve their lifestyle or to improve their look there will always be emotional benefits when a person is finally able to feel comfortable in their body. Many people find that they are more outgoing, personable and confident when they become accustomed to their transformation and this heightened sense of self-esteem can be a benefit that lasts a lifetime. Risks of Plastic Surgery:Although complications from plastic surgery are quite rare nowadays each person who is considering having this type of surgery done should make themselves aware of the possible risks of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery complications can range from scarring to fatalities and the effects of surgery can sometimes be traumatizing to patients both physically and psychologically. Even though complications are uncommon it is important to keep plastic surgery dangers in mind. The risks of plastic surgery will differ depending on the individual and the procedure they opt for. Scarring is one of the most common risks that people considering plastic surgery should be aware of. Most surgeons will try to hide incision lines in places where they aren't noticeable, like under the crease of the breast in breast augmentation plastic surgery and in the hairline in facial plastic surgery, but most surgeries will still result in permanent scarring.
Cost of Plastic Surgery:
No, plastic surgery is not very costly. The expenses involved for any procedure depends upon the institution, the infrastructure required, material used, and nature of the procedure, anesthesia and the operating surgeon. As compared to most other superspecialities, a routine plastic surgery procedure requires minimal instrumentation and infrastructure but high degree of innovative surgical skill.
Plastic Surgery in India:
If you need any medical treatments (from Plastic to heart surgery) the cost of these in India is far cheaper than in the US or Europe. So, you can have treatments done in India , get world class treatments, get a free holiday and have cash left over! India offers what you call a language advantage - a patient would surely prefer a country where English is widely spoken. Also, it is believed that the facilities in India are more suited for International patients. Many highly qualified doctors have had some form of training from abroad, especially USA and UK. Indian surgeons and doctors are known for their skill and research throughout the world. Most patients from countries like USA and UK travel to developing countries such as India for treatment because India offers some of the cheapest pricing options of treatment, offers a good holiday, there are no waiting lists or queues to stand in, the doctors are comparable to anyone in the world and finally, language does not pose a problem as most people speak English. Indian Biotech Market - Firm And Steady Growth
Biotechnology sector of India is not a new one. It has been nourished since its inception by national government. Nevertheless, this industry is still in the infant stage. Currently, India is investing in academics and existing industry's infrastructure considerably to expedite the overall growth of sector.
Biopharma sector enjoys the major share of the total biotech market. It comprises of therapeutics, vaccines, animal health care products and diagnostics. Notably, whenever any Indian biopharma company releases its products in market, MNCs reduce prices for these products to vie. The bioindustrial segment consists of organic amino acids, enzymes, yeast and yeast-based products and account for over 10% of the total market share. These products, actually, were first off the mark from the biotech industry of India.
In India most of the bio drugs and diagnostic products are for the government and private sector hospitals and patients. The second group of buyers of biotechnology products and biomolecules are the research institutes and pharmaceutical companies. The emerging trend of corporate players establishing diagnostic centers in small towns and rural areas is providing opportunities for the import of automated systems and imported reagents.
Patients and private and government hospitals are the main consumers of diagnostic products and bio drugs in India. Pharmaceutical companies and research institutes are the second set of consumers of biomolecules and biotechnology products. The evolving trend of establishing diagnostic centers in rural areas and small towns by corporate houses is giving the opportunities for the import of reagents and automated systems.
Indian biotech market is very promising. Though there is a great scope for investments and import in healthcare biotechnology sector of India still the industry is facing many challenges; first being inadequate IP (intellectual property) protection. India pledged to product patent by improving its patent law in 2005. Therefore, firstly, some entrepreneurs lead the industry and dispersed research supported by government. IP should be protected through proper implication is necessary for the development of product. Second challenge is that majority of the healthcare expense is "out of pocket expenditure". As a result, the new innovative drugs, which are costly and can't be afforded by Indian patients, are not sold in India. It has kept big honchos of global biotechnology sector away from Indian market. But, the increasing coverage in health insurance is changing the market.
Third challenge the industry facing is the shortage of biotechnology experts. Till recently, government institutes, in cooperation with private ones, conducted most of the biotech research. Now many education institutes, like schools and colleges, have introduced the courses in biotech.

The Food Processing Industry: India's next growth sector
The food processing industry is badly in need of infrastructure and the government is offering several incentives and tax breaks for foreign investment. Currently, 100% FDI is permitted in the food processing sector and the Union Government is likely to allow 51% FDI in food retailing, covering the sectors of dairy, marine, poultry, fruits and vegetables by end 2006, it is estimated.
According to the McKinsey FAIDA report, India produces 146 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables, second only to China. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) estimates that the food processing industry, which is currently worth USD 325.4 billion, is likely to grow at 8% per year till 2007 and 10% per year by 2010. It is estimated that USD 108.4 billion was annually lost to wastage due to outdated technology, gaps in the distribution chain and widespread use of commission agents.
Only 6% of fruit and vegetable production in India is currently processed while the target is 20%. To increase the country's share in the global market to 3% from its current 1%, the government is opening the industry to international companies to improve infrastructure, cold storages, packing and transportation.
It was due to this lack of an efficient supply chain as well as a continuous cold chain that India's first international food retailer, Nanz which was backed by Delhi-based Escorts Group, US-based Marsh Supermarket and Nanz AG from Germany went out of business.
An empowered group of ministers have already given the go-ahead to the proposal of FDI in food retailing. This move will allow foreign investment in food retailing, grant infrastructure status to the food processing industry, access to priority sector lending and reform taxation laws.
The main push behind opening up the agri-business sector is to reduce wastage, which amounts Rs. 50,000 crores annually. Minister for Food Processing Subodh Kant Sahai said that the food-processing and agri-business industries should get an "infrastructure category" status that has been given to airports, to attract investment to set up cold chains and other supply chain components.
On a related note, there's a great article, This brigade will charge India into glory! in The Indian Express by Vivek Bharati, an advisor to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) about how the food processing industry can bring about changes in rural India the same way that IT has changed urban India.
India has potential to grow most crops and become the food bowl of the world. Aggressive forays into the global market through export of processed food, organic food and fresh produce can unleash linkages that can redefine India's countryside by ushering in a second green revolution.

India Tourism
According to the current estimates tourism represents 6.5 percent of the global workforce, employing 112 million people throughout the world. It plays a major role in the global economy and represents a significant global gross national product (GNP). Tourism is a highly fragmented industry with many different participants including tour operators, the transport and hotel industry, and of course, the tourists themselves. At the start of the 90's decade, several trends were observed at the global level. According to the report of the World Tourism Organisation,1990, Asia/Oceania was expected to receive more international tourists than any other region in the world. At the same time tourists were diversifying into highly specialised groups from among a broad range of activities. Increased interest in travel to natural and less disturbed areas due to a rapidly growing interest in environmental matters and nature was perceived as one of the trends. This was expected to result in an increased interest in Asia and tropical America, areas which still contained large tracts of wilderness (WWF-UK, 1992).
Indian domestic and outbound tourism will become an US$80 billion industry by the year 2007, according to a newly released report. The rise from the present $32 billion level will be fuelled by increasing spending power, government initiatives and India's integration into the world economy, UNI reported, quoting a study by the international global strategic management-consulting firm McKinsey.
Tourism comprises only 5.2 per cent of the country's gross domestic product due to low per capita income, the study conducted in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said. - (EMEconomy)
Although in India tourism has been a part of the country's ethos for a long time,it had predominantly been restricted to religious, archeological and recreational sites. Nature tourism, predominantly in the form of shooting and hunting trips, has gradually given way to photographic and nature oriented tours. Today, in the parks, sanctuaries and unprotected wilderness of India, nature based tourism has increased in scope, and is understood to, include nature trails, trekking , mountaineering, rock climbing , safaris, adventure sports and bird watching , in addition to photography expeditions. Most of these activities take place in forest and mountain terrain rich in wildlife and local ambience.
Such nature based tourism has either been species oriented or ecosystem oriented. Species oriented tourism in India has been confined to a few flagship species such as the tiger, which draws tourists to parks that are its natural habitat; or the Siberian crane, which is a major draw for tourists to the well-known Keoladeo National Park. In fact, most of India's popular parks and sanctuaries are the natural habitat for one or another flagship species. The problem here is that if the flagship species is not sighted often enough, tourist flow may stem. Its dependence on a single species thus makes species oriented tourism rather precarious.

Low Cost Airlines Vs. Indian Railways: Heating Competition, Melting Prices
The continuing fare tussle between the Railways and the Low-cost airlines has changed the contemporary scenario for the Indian traveller. A ticket on India's low-cost carrier (LCC) has made flying, once confined to the rich and elite, an affordable reality for the hordes of Indians travelling across the country.
It has taken some time for the low-cost airline industry to carve a niche for themselves, but the wallet-friendly LCCs are here to stay.
When Air Deccan introduced airfares almost equalling the AC II-tier train fares, the response from the leading domestic airlines like Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines was immediate. Slashed rates and Advanced Purchase schemes (Apex) swiftly began to take shape, resulting upto 30 to 40 per cent slashed fares compared with the original prices.
Barely a year after Air Deccan took off came the launch of Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines, followed by SpiceJet and GoAir. Today the number of LCC's has multiplied from three to a dozen in a matter of months. Since the entry barriers are low, players such as Paramount, IndiGO (Interglobe), Yamuna Air or Kerala Airways, have already filed flight plans.
Continuing a steady progress, LCC's are slowly eating into the aviation market share, capturing almost one third of the total market.
However the dip in market share does not necessarily mean a drop in the number of passengers or revenues for the mainstream airlines, as the size of the air travel segment has also been increasing. In the market driven by the LCCs- with about half of the passengers being first-time air travellers, there's a bigger pie for everyone.
But the biggest loser so far has been Indian Airlines. Even with its trendy make over called Indian, it has been left with a market share of only 23.88 per cent while the potential Jet-Sahara combine controls 45 per cent.
As a result it is now exploring the possibility of floating a subsidiary for low-cost operations by merging Air-India Express, the low-fare arm of A-I with Alliance Air, the decade-old wholly-owned subsidiary of IA servicing tier II cities. This could mean that India would have its first-ever LCC, having both domestic and international operations.
However this fairy tale of low cost airline advent is still in its initial stages.
In Europe, North America and Australasia, most successful low cost airlines have operated primarily in domestic, or unrestricted international markets. The LCCs in India on the other hand, have to operate in a highly regulated domestic environment. This is likely to get compounded with the surge in aviation fuel prices over the past year and the plummeting infrastructure with congestion in airports, lack of landing facilities and parking slots, and increasing staff costs driven by internal competition.
These non-frill LCCs are characterised by few on-board services and elimination of catering. But for the Indian travellers accustomed to travelling in the crowded trains for long hours, the aggressive tariff structure by the LCCs, costing nominally higher than the AC II-tier by train, is becoming a popular alternative.
With the LCCs now targeting the middle-class travellers, the Indian skies are slowly but surely opening up to the one billion plus Indian population.
