But then Corbett National Park is not just a tiger country, it is also one of the best preserved parks in India. The Corbett National Park is a delight. The history of the park can be traced back to early 1800s when the forest was under the Terhi Garhwal rulers. Following Gorkha invasion British assistance to the Garhwal rulers, a part of the forest was transferred to the British, who started open plunder and ruthless deforestation for timber. Teak, a precious hardwood from the forests was used to fulfill the need for railway sleepers. The first step towards protection of the forest was initiated in 1858 by Major Ramsey. In 1879, the Forest Department took control of the area and declared it a reserve forest under the Forest Act.

It was declared a national park in 1936 and was called Hailey National Park, after Sir William Malcohm Hailey, an enthusiastic conservationist and the governor of the United Provinces. Spreading over an area of 325 sq km then, it was country?s first and world?s third national park. It was rechristened Jim Corbett National Park in 1957, after the legendary hunter-naturalist turned author and photographer, who spent years in this area and helped in setting up the park .With the help of the World Wildlife Fund, Project Tiger was launched in Corbett National Park in 1973, and it was the country?s first national park to come under Project Tiger.

In 1991 the area of the reserve was increased with the inclusion of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
